This wine-growing region is located in southern Hungary, close to the border with Croatia, and is named after the town of the same name Known as Villány-Siklós until 1999). The vineyard area totals around 1.800 hectares. The Mediterranean climate provides long, hot summers and mild winters. The soils are predominantly rich in limestone, with admixtures of clay and loess. The main varieties grown around the town of Villány are the red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Kékoporto (Blauer Portugieser), Merlot, Kadarka , Nagyburgundi (Pinot Noir) and Zweigelt. The special feature in the region is a particularly warm ridge in the Villány mountains, where full-bodied, long-lived red wines are produced. In the area around the town of Siklós, mainly white wines are produced from Chardonnay, Hárslevelü, Olasz Rizling (Welschriesling) and Tramini.
