  Sopron

This wine-growing region is located in the extreme north-west of Hungary, close to the border with Austria, it is named after the town of the same name (German Ödenburg). It is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Hungary, the Celts already cultivated vines here. The climate is characterised by a fairly cool and rainy summer and by a sunny autumn, it is positively influenced by lake Neusiedl, which is close by. The vineyard area totals around 1900 hectares, the soils are clay, loess, limestone and slate. The climate favours the production of red wines, the most important variety is Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), others include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nagyburgundi (Pinot Noir) and Zweigelt. White wines are made from Chardonnay, Leányka (Feteasca Alba), Sauvignon Blanc and Zöld Veltelini (Grüner Veltliner). There are several joint ventures with Austrian wine producers, for example Pfneisl.
