  Somló

This wine-growing region is located in north-west Hungary, around 50 kilometres north of lake Balaton. In the past, oxidatively matured wines were produced here that were in competition with Tokaj. The climate is characterised by warm, moderate summers with lots of sunshine and frequent winds. The total vineyard area is around 700 hectares, the vineyards are located on the slopes of an extinct volcano, the soils are partly clay. Mainly white wines with prominent acidity, a high level of alcohol and considerable maturation potential are produced here. The leading grape varieties are Chardonnay, Furmint, Hárslevelü, Juhfark, Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Rajnairizling (Rhine Riesling) and Tramini (Gewürztraminer).
