Wine-growing region as well as province and capital city of the same name located in the north-west corner of Argentinia. The total vineyard area is around 1.500 hectares. The region is located between the region of Jujuy in the north and Catamarca resp. La RiojaLa Rioja in the south. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 1.500 to 2.000 metres above sea level, stretching along the slopes of the Andean vallies created by the Cafayate and Calchaqui rivers. The vineyards of the Finca Colomé estate are even located at an altitude of 2.400 metres above sea level, making them among the highest vineyards in the world. The deep soils consist of fine sand on a sub-soil of stones, providing excellent drainage. Irrigation is essential for the vineyards, with water sourced primarily from the Calchaquí and Santa María rivers, as well as from their tributaries. In addition, water is pumped from wells as much as 100 metres deep. More than 90% of the vines are trained on overhead trellises. Differences in temperature are extreme – dropping from 40 °C by day to 12 °C by night, with lows of minus 6 °C in winter. The sumemrs are long, with a frost-free period lasting from October to April. Summer showers often also produce hail, which is geared here, The most important wine-growing zone is in the „Valles Calchaquíes” to the west of the city of Salta. The dominant grape variety here is Torrontés RiojanoPernod since 1996) and Michel Torino. Mention should also be made of an experimental vineyard established by the well-known French oenologist Michel Rolland and Arnaldo Etchart.
