This wine-growing region is located in north-west Hungary, close to the borders with Austria and Slovakia, in the foothills of the Bakony mountains. Benedictine monks cam to the area in 996, established a monastery and also started cultivating vines. The climate is characterised by moderately warm summers and mild winters. The vineyard area totals around 750 hectares. The soils are loess and brown forest soils. The leading grape varieties are Cserszegi Füszeres, Chardonnay, Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Irsay Oliver, Királyleányka (Feteasca Regala), Ottonel Muskotály (Muskat-Ottonel), Rajnairizling (Rhine Riesling), Rizlingszilváni (Müller-Thurgau) and Tramini (Gewürztraminer).
