This wine-growing region is located in the far south-west of Hungary, close to the border with Croatia. It is often also referred to by the name of the principal town of Pécs, where wine has been cultivated since ancient times (it was known then as Sopianae). This is the warmest region in Hungary, with mild winters and long, hot summers, with frequent droughts. The vineyard area totals around 1000 hectares. The soils are loess and sandstone. The leading grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cirfandli (Zierfandler), Furmint, Kadarka, Merlot, Nagyburgundi (Pinot Noir), Olasz Rizling (Welschriesling), Sauvignon Blanc and Skürzebarát (Pinot Gris). Mainly white wines and sparkling wines are produced here.
