Nordosten

This wine-growing region is located in the north-west of Hungary, to the east of the Eger region, and close to the border with Slovakia. The vineyard area totals around 7000 hectares, the vineyards are located around the city of Gyöngyös. The soils are volcanic. Mainly white wines are produced here. The market is dominated by large cooperatives, such as Danubia and Nagyréde. The leading grape varieties are Chardonnay, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Ottonel Muskotály (Muskat-Ottonel), Rizlingszilváni (Müller-Thurgau), Sauvignon Blanc, Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) and Zweigelt.
