Vinho Verde A port house by the name of Fonseca, Monteiro & Co was founded by a group of Englishmen in Vila Nova de Gaia in the 18th century. This was then purchased in 1822 by a Portuguese, Manuel Pedro Guimarãens. The company has been run since 1991 by David Guimarãens, the fifth generation of this family to do so. The company was known for a long time as Guimarãens Vinhos, and was renamed to ist current designation in 1988. The company owns, among others, the three quintas Cruzeiro, Panascal and Santo António, with a total vineyard area of 130 hectares, port as well as other wines are produced there. Among the top products of the house are the Vintage Port, the Ruby Reserve Bin 27 as well as the organically produced Terra Prima. Fonseca-Guimarãens was taken over in 1948 by the multinational Taylor’s group, but the two houses are run independently in terms of products and styles. The company is not related to the Fonseca company in Azãteijo.
