Nordwesten

This wine-growing region is located in Hungary, around 30 kilometres north-east of lake Balaton, and approximately the same distance to the west of Budapest. The vineyard area totals around 2.000 hectares. The climate is characterised by plenty of sunshine and low rainfall. Towards the end of the 19th century József Törley, who had learnt his trade in Champagne, became aware of the region, which has a mixture of loess, limestone and black earth soils as well as a climate ideally suited fort he cultivation of Chardonnay. He established a major sparkling wine industry here. Other varieties include Olasz Rizling (Welschriesling), Rajnairizling (Rhine Riesling), Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc, as well as new crossings such as Zefir, Zengö and Zenit.
