Wine-growing region (GI) in the federal state of New South Wales in Australia. This used to be mainly a fruit-growing region, known as the Central Highlands, with viticulture on the increase in recent times. The climate is characterised by warm days and cool nights. The vineyard area totals 300 hectares, the vineyards are located at an altitude of between 600 and 900 metres above sea level on the slopes of an extinct volcano called Mount Canabolas. The most important white varieties planted are Chardonnay and Riesling, the leading red varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Shiraz. A large share of the grapes is sold off, mainly to Rosemount Estate and Reynolds Yarraman. Well-known producers include Bloodwood, Brangayne of Orange, Canabolas-Smith and Highland Heritage Estate.
