Balaton (Plattensee)

This wine-growing region is located in Hungary in the eastern section of the north shore of lake Balaton. The vineyard area totals around 2300 hectares, the soils are slate, sand and limestone, with some sections of reddish soil coloured by iron oxide. The region is sub-divided into two sections named after the principal towns, the wines of Balatonfüred tend to have a higher level of alcohol. The most important grape varieties are Chardonnay, Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Ottonel Muskotály (Muskat-Ottonel), Rajniarizling (Rhine Riesling), Rizlingszilváni (Müller-Thurgau), Sauvignon Blanc, Tramini and Zweigelt.
