This federal state of the USA (capital: Phoenix) represents a tiny island of viticulture in the south-west of the USA, with a total vineyard area of just on 200 hectares, most of this is located in the south, close to the Mexican border, with just a few scattered estates in the north. The only classified AVA is Sonoita. Mainly European grape varieties are grown. The red soils in the south-west (see soil types under Terra Rossa) are particularly suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. There are 14 wine estates, the most important of which are Callaghan Vineyards (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah), Colibri Vineyard and Winery, Dos Cabezas (Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah and Sangiovese), Echo Canyon (Syrah, Petit Sirah), Fort Bowie Vineyards and Kokopelli (largest producer).
