Nordwesten

This wine-growing region is located in the northwest of Hungary, north of Lake Balaton and close to the border with Slovakia. The Esterházy family established vineyards here in the 19th century, thus laying the foundations for modern viticulture. At Neszmély you will find the state-of-the-art Hilltop winery. The soils are either sandy or based on loess, and cover a total area of around 1.900 hectares. The most important grape varieties are Chardonnay, Ezerjó, Irsai Oliver, Leányka (Feteasca Alba), Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Rizlingszilváni (Müller-Thurgau), Sauvignon Blanc, Szürkebarat (Pinot Gris) and Tramini (Gewürztraminer). Predominantly full-bodied white wines with prominent acidity and a long maturation potential are produced here.
