The estate is located in the commune of Villabuena in the Rioja Alavesa#Rioja sub-region in Rioja in Spain. It was founded in 1880 by Francisco Javier Solano y Eulate, the Marqués de la Solana. On the advice of the Bordeaux oenologist Pineau, he was the first at the time to mature his wines in oak barrels, and marketed these at the time under the name „Marqués de la Solana”. Following his death, his daughters Maria Solano (grandmother of the current owners) and Maria Teresa inherited the property, and changed the name to „Bodegas de Crianza S.M.S.” (abbreviation of the family names). The property was extensively renovated in the 1970’s. The current name has only been in use since 1996, in honour of the grandmother, Maria Solano, who was also known as the „Marquesa”. The current owners, the fourth generation of the family, are Juan Pablo de Simón and his siblings. The fifth generation, in the shape of Pablo and Jaime des Simón, is set to continue the tradition. The estate has been certified in terms of the quality management system ISO 9001-2000 and BRG Global Standard Food since 2004. The vineyard area totals 65 hectares on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria. The area is planted with the classical Rioja varieties Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura and Tempranillo. Around 400.000 kilogrammes of grapes are processed each year. Fermentation takes place in relatively small temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with capacities of 8.000 to 25.000 litres, to facilitate separate processing of the different varieties, and to ensure a convenient separation according to sites and quality levels. Around 3.000 barriques, half each of American and French oak, are available for maturation. The product range includes numerous white and red wines marketed under the „Valserrano” label.
