La Rioja
D.O. ca RiojaThe estate is located in the commune of Elciego in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region in Rioja in Spain. It was founded in 1860. The vineyard area totals 210 hectares. The bunches are checked and hand-selected individually on a conveyor belt. Only Reserva and Gran Reserva-level wines are produced. The traditional Riojas are made from 90% Tempranillo, some Cabernet Sauvignon is added in vintages with high rainfall. The absolute flagship is inspired by Bordeaux styles, the „Barón de Chirel” (40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Graciano, 25% Tempranillo), which is matured in oak barrels for 28 months. The estate has always had special permission to use Cabernet Sauvignon officially in the Rioja wines. Annual production is around 4 million bottles of wine. The estate has also been active in the DO Rueda (Castilia-Léon) since the early 1970’s, the white wines produced there from Sauvignon Blanc have contributed significantly to the upswing of this region.
