The estate is located in Malpica de Tajo, 50 kilometres from the city of Toledo in the La Mancha region in Spain. It is named after its aristocratic owner, whose full civil name is Carlos Falcó y Fernández de Córdova. Part of the vineyard area has been owned by the family since 1292. The current owner started growing wine in this extremely dry region in 1974, using the most modern methods. He planted various French grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot and Syrah, which were not permitted at the time. He was supported by the oenologists Michel Rolland and Émile Peynaud (1912-2004). A newly built cellar was completed in 1989. The vineyard area currently totals 50 hectares. The Marqués has been considered a living legend, certainly since his wine was given the top rating by Robert Parker in 1995. The estate was given a spezial dispensation in the past to label the table wines as „Vino de Mesa de Toledo”, with a vintage, even though there is no such thing as a DO Toledo. This is now no longer necessary, as the single vineyard site Dominio de Valdepusa was classified as a so-called Vino de Pago in 2003 (this is now the highest level of wine quality in Spain). The wines are produced under the name of this vineyard site. The flagship wine ist he red blend „Eméritus” (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot). Wines have also been produced in the Rueda region since 1989. There has been a cellar in Ollauri in the Rioja Alta sub-region in Rioja since 1994. The vienyard area there totals 15 hectares, Here, Rioja wines are produced in a joint venture with the Berberana and Lagunilla estates. Finally, for the moment, 20 hectares of vienyards were acquired in the Duero valley in 2000, wines are produced there under the Bodegas Durius name. The family also owns the Marqués de Griñón estate in the Mendoza wine-growing region in Argentina. A joint venture with the large multinational „Arco Bodegas Unidas” group has been in place there since 1994, with a large share. The Marqués is still active in a leading management position.

The vintage 2008

Unfortunately, no wines have been submitted for several years now, so that we are unable to form a meaningful opinion on the current performance of this producer. For this reason, we see no option but to suspend the classification until further notice.
