The „López de Heredia - Viña Tondonia” estate is located in the city of Haro at the centre of the Rioja Alta sub-region in Rioja in Spain. It was founded in 1877 by Don Raphael López de Heredia y Landeta, who had previously been in the employ of a French merchant house. Round about the turn of the 20th century the estate was considered to be a pioneer in cellar technology, as French cellar technology was employed. Today the estate is run by the fifth generation of the family, María José López de Heredia. The vineyard area totals 170 hectores, the area is planted with the classical Rioja varieties Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo, Graciano, Viura and Malvasía. An amount of grapes roughly equal to the own production is also bought in. The wines are still made in the traditional style. There are no stainless steel tanks, so fermentation takes place in large open oak fermenters, egg-white is used for fining, and the wine is not filtered. 15.000 barriques are available for maturation, these are made in the estate’s own cooperage from exclusively American oak, the barrels are used for decades. The brands produced include, for example, „Viña Bosconia”, „Viña Cubillo” (65% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha Tinta, Viura, Mazuelo, Graciano) and „Viña Gravonia” (Viura), as well as the flagship wines „Viña Tondonia Tinto” (Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo) and „Viña Tondonia Blanco” (90% Viura, 10% Malvasía), which are named after a vineyard site.
