Spain
Cataluña (Catalunya)Sparkling wine empire with its headquarters in the town of Sant Sadurni d´Anoia in the DO region Penedès in Catalonia in Spain. The group is the largest producer of cava, with an annual production of more than 100 million bottles, and is thus ahead of its major competitor Codorníu. It was founded by Pedro Ferrer Bosch 1889, the vineyard area today totals around 420 hectares. The name Freixenet is derived from that of the „La Freixeneda” estate (ash grove) in Medonia-Penedès, which has been owned by the family since the 13th century. The holdings of this mega-group include the René Barbier, Castellblanch and Segura Viudas estates (all in Penedès), Gloria Ferrer (California), the champagne house Henri Abelé (Reims), a sparkling wine company in Mexico (50 ha) as well as a winery in Yan Tai on the east coast of China, built in the 1980s. The standard cavas are Carta Nevada and (in black bottles) Cordón Negro. The premium product is the Reserva Real, made only in the best vintages. It is a blend of the varieties Xarel-Lo, Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay as well as of a top-quality vintage wine aged in oak barrels. It was given its name at the occasion of a visit by the Spanish royal family in 1987, to whom it was served for the first time. A cava produced from Monastrell (red) and Xarel-Lo (white) was launched on the market in 1996. Still table wines are also produced.
