La Rioja
D.O. ca RiojaThe roots of the current company go back to 1896, when the Spaniard Federico Paternina purchased three bodegas in Ollauri in the Rioja region in Spain. These included the Conde de los Andes, which dates back to the 16th century. In 1920, Paternina acquired a co-operative in Haro, significantly expanding his production. World-wide exports of the wines commenced in the 1940’s. The company experienced increasing financial problems in the 1960’s, and was purchased by the Rumasa group (owned by Jose Marea Ruiz Mateos). However, the problems experienced by Paternina as well as by the new owner became even greater. The Rumasa group was heavily in debt by the early 1980’s, when it was taken over by the Spanish state. Paternina was sold to Marcos Eguizábal Ramirez on an auction in 1985 for a single Peseta. The new beginning was tough, as 40.000 cases of wine of unacceptable quality had to be destroyed. A new cellar in Haro was brought on line in 1990. Good quality products ensured the old positive image was restored by the mid-1990’s. By then, Marco’s son Carlos Eguizábal was working in the business. In 1998 the company’s shares were listed on the stock exchange. The company also owns the Bodegas Franco Españolas wine estate.
The „Bodegas Internacionales” company in Jerez was purchased in 1994, thiscompany owns a number of traditional sherry brands such as Bertola, DĂez Hermanos, MarquĂ©s de MĂ©rito, Bertola and JosĂ© PemartĂn y Cia war. Paternina then increased ist focus on the production of sherry and brandy de Jerez, and became a leading producer in this field.
The new cellars in Rioja are located in the city of Haro in the Rioja Alta sub-region in Rioja. The company owns 100 hectares of vineyards, and additionally large amounts of grapes are bought in from grape growers and co-operatives. 50.000 barriques are available for maturation. The products made in the largest quantities are the Crianzas „Banda Azul”, „Banda Rojo” and „Banda Dorada” (70 to 80% Tempranillo, 10 to 20% Garnacha Tinta, 5 to 10% Mazuelo, up to 5% Graciano). The premium products are the Reserva „Viña Vial”, as well as the Gran Reservas „Federico Paternina” (65% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha Tinta, 10% Graciano, 10 % Mazuelo) and „Conde de los Andes” (80% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha Tinta and 10% Mazuelo).
A new bodega was completed in the commune of Quintana del Pidio close to Pesquera de Duero in the Castilia-León region in 2000. The vineyard area in the DO Ribera del Duero totals 41 hectares in Quintana del Pidio, Gumiel de Mercado and in Gumiel de Izán. There are plans to expand this to 100 hectares. The wines have been marketed since 2004 under the Marqués de Valparaiso label.
