The Spanish sherry house of „Emilio Lustau” is located in the city of Jerez. It was founded in 1896 by José Ruiz-Berdejo y Veyan, then under the name of „Finca Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza”. The sherries produced were sold on to large bodegas. In 1940, the founder’s son in law, Emilio Lustau Ortega, moved into buildings that had originally been part of the city wall of Jerez in Moorish times, and began marketing and exporting his own sherries himself. Under his successor, Rafael Balao, the bodega became one of the most innovative, which also revived such classics as the „East India Solera”. The vineyard area totals around 170 hectares, located in the DO regions Jerez and Manzanilla. Tomás Abad is a subsidiary company. Since 1990, the majority of the company’s shares have been held by Luís Caballero, although the company continues to operate independently. A practice that has been taken over from Lustau is that of buying sherries from other sherry producers in barrel, storing these for maturation, and then bottling them in their original, unblended form. This type of product is known as Almacenista. Well-known Lustau brands include the Amontillado „Escuadrilla” and the Olorosos „Don Nuno” and „Emperatriz Eugenia”.

The vintage 2009

Unfortunately, no wines have been submitted for tasting for several years now, so that we are unable to form a meaningful opinion on the current performance of this producer. For this reason, we see no option but to suspend the classification until further notice.

The vintage 2008

Unfortunately, no current wines have been submitted for tasting for some time, so that, for the time being, we are listing this as a temporary classification.
