The DO in the region of Madrid in Spain has a total vineyard area of 11.800 hectares, it forms a crescent around the southern suburbs of Madrid, and is divided into three sub-zones. San Martín de Valdeiglesias lies to the west of the city, Navalcarnero lies to the south-west, and Arganda lies to the south-east. The white wines are made from Airén, Albillo, Malvar, Parellada, Torrontés and Viura, with the last three of these varieties only permitted since 1996. The red wines are made primarily from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and Garnacha (Grenache), as well as from small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
