DO located in the region of Galicia in north-west Spain, close to the border with Portugal. The name translates as “golden valley”, and refers to the fact that gold was mined here in ancient times. The vineyard area totals around 1.500 hectares, the vineyards are on limestone-rich and slate soils, and are located mostly on slopes along the Sil river. The continental climate is characterised by hot summers and cold winters, with a long autumn season. All types of wine are permitted within the DO. The region became famous for the white grape variety Godello, which had virtually disappeared as a result of phylloxera, and was rediscovered and revived here. Other white varieties planted include Palomino and Doña Blanca. Red wines are made primarily from the Mencía grape, they are sometimes also blended with Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merenzao (María Ardoña).
