Cataluña (Catalunya)

Zone in the province of Tarragona in the wine-growing region of Catalonia in Spain. This was previously known as „Falset“, but was classified as a DO under the new Montsant name in 2001. The zone encircles the DOCa Priorato like a belt. The vineyard area totals 1.800 hectares, the vineyards are located at an altitude of 200 to 700 metres above sea level. There are three types of soil: limestone-rich with a gravelly structure, granitic soils with sand, and slate. Permitted grape varieties are: red - Cariñena, Garnache Tinta and Tempranillo, white - Macabeo and Garnacha Blanca. The traditional products are fortified liqueur wines matured oxidatively in barriques (Vi Ranci), these are called Mistela Blanca and Mistela Negra.
