This DO is named after the city of the same name, it is located in the Castilia-León wine-growing region to the west of the DO Ribera del Duero in Spain. The vineyard area totals around 2.900 hectares, spread over 12 communes, mostly on slopes and terraces. The continental climate is characterised by hot summers and cold winters. A Clairet was produced here in medieval times, and the good reputation the region enjoys today is also founded on the rosé wines (rosados), which make up two thirds of production. These are made from the red varieties Tinto del País (Tempranillo, minimum of 60%) and Garnacha Tinta, as well as from the white varieties Verdejo, Viura, Palomino and Albillo, they are matured briefly in barrels. They are described as Cigales Nuevo on the back label. The red wines are made from Tinto del País (minimum of 85%) and Garnacha Tinta, and in some cases are also blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.
