La Rioja
D.O. ca RiojaThe „Compañia de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez” has its headquarters in Logroño ithe Rioja region in Spain. It was founded in 1994. Telmo Rodriguez is a Basque, and spent his childhood on his fahters wine estate, Remelluri in Rioja. He studied biology in Bilbao, then obtained his diploma in oenology in Bordeaux, and studied the practical aspects of winemaking under, among others, the legendary Bruno Prats at Château Cos d´Estournel. He then had a vision. He was determined to make the best possible wines simultaneously in various wine-growing regions in Spain. Together with his university friend Pablo Eguzkiza he started in 1994 what is perhaps the most innovative and ambitious project in recent Spanish wine-making history. Telmo Rodriguez is sometimes referred to as the „driving winemaker”, as he is constantly on the road in order to produce his wines, working with his team of a dozen Bordeaux-trained oenologists as well as in co-operation with local producers. The objective is to focus on the grape varieties typical of each region, and on the characteristics of each wine. Telmo Rodriguez was one of the first wine producers in Spain to make an intensive study of terroir. The grapes are always sourced from the best vineyard parcels, predominantly from very old vines, and are then processed as gently as possible in modern cellar facilities to produce „vinos con alma” (wines with soul - as Telmo says). In 2002 the „Revue du Vin de France” gave him extremely high ratings, and enthused over the new „Bordeaux en Espagne”. So far, he has produced wines in the DO regions Alicante, Cigales, Malaga, Navarra, Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Rueda and Toro.
