Spain
Cataluña (Catalunya)Famous sparkling wine producer with headquarters in Sant Sadurní D´Anoia (Barcelona) in Spain. It consists of several wine estates and cellar complexes, with a total vineyard area of 3.245 hectares. The first wine cellar was founded by the Codorniu family in Sant Sadurni dAnoia in what is today the DO Penedes (Catalonia) in 1551. In 1659 Maria Anna Codorníu married a man by the name of Raventós, and this is considered to be the founding year of the company. Anna was the last to bear the name of Codorníu. A direct descendant, Josep Raventós, produced a Spanish sparkling wine using the Champagne method in the early 1870's, following a visit to Champagne, thus laying the foundation for the cava industry in Spain. However, he was not, as is often claimed. the first to do so, but he was the first to use the grape varieties considered to be the standard today, and as head of the company played an important part in the rise of cava. For a long time, the sparkling wine was known in Spain as Xampàn (Champán). Joseps son Manuel Raventós took over the management of the family business in 1885. The Codorníu sparkling wine received a gold medal at the world exhibition in Barcelona in1888. The wine has been exported since 1897. The royal coat of arms may also be displayed on the label since 1897. The five-storey cellar was built in 1915, it has been a national monument since 1976, it is located in a beautiful park, and features a labyrinth of underground cellars 30 kilometres long. The old bodega has been converted to a museum.
The standard cava is a blend made of the classical Parellada, Macabeo and Xarel-Lo grapes. In addition, some cavas are also made with a share of Chardonnay, these are „Codorníu 1551”, „Anna de Codorníu” and the flagship Reserva „Jaume Codorníu”. Codorníu was successful in the early 1990s, against the vehement opposition of its main competitor Freixenet, to obtain permission for the use of Chardonnay, and it is likely that permission for Pinot Noir will follow soon. In the 1970s, Codorníu also invented the machine riddling process for sparkling wine bottles (see under gyropalette). The 450th anniversary of the company was celebrated in 2001. King Juan Carlos I. (born 1938) visited the winery, and autographed the label of the bottle that contains 26 litres, and has been named „Gran CAVIT Primato”. After Freixenet, the company is the second-largest producer of cava, with around 100 million bottles annually. In addition, large quantities of still wines are also produced.
Numerous other companies are also part of the group. Manuel Raventós founded the famous Raïmat wine estate in 1914. In addition, the company owns the Masía Bach and Rondel estates in Penedès, the Bilbaínas estate in the Rioja Alta sub-region, as well as an own station for vine research. In 1992, the Codorníu Napa winery was opened in Carneros in California, USA, where sparkling wines are produced.
