D.O. ca RiojaAbbreviation, and common designation for the „Compañia Vinícola del Norte de España” company in the Rioja Alta sub-region of Rioja in Spain. It was founded in 1879 by the brothers Raimundo and Eusebio Real de Asúa, together with Isidro Corcuera Cinco. It is still owned by the family, with the fifth generation currently in chargee. The estate is one of the legendary producers of extremely long-lived Riojas, that are capable of lasting for 30 years and more. Up until the 1930s, practically the entire production was exported. The estates own vineyard area totals 520 hectares, thse provide two thirds of the grapes used in the production of red Rioja, the remaining grapes are sourced from contract growers. The product range includes the red Rioja brands „Cune”, „Graciano” (varietal Tempranillo), „Viña Real” as well as the flagship „Imperial”, as well as the white Rioja „Monopole”. In 1989, 15 million Euros were invested in new cellar equipment, including 40 large stainless steel tanks. The total capacity of tanks is 17 million litres, and the cellar holds 22.000 oak barriques for wood maturation. Annual production is around 5,4 million bottles (450.000 cases) of wine, of which around 15% is exported. The company also owns the Viñedos del Contino estate in Rioja Alavesa.
