The ā€˛Bodegas Rodaā€¯ estate is located in the city of Haro in the heart of the Rioja Alta sub-region in Rioja in Spain. It was founded in 1987 by the Rotllant-Daurella family, a family that has been involved in the wine trade for a long time. From the outset, the focus has been on the very highest quality possible. With a view to the mistakes made in the past, only the very best grapes of Rioja, from the oldest vines, were purchased in 1992. This policy made it possible to produce wines of exceptional quality. In the meantime, some vineyards with very old vines were leased in the vicinity of Haro. The wines are made in the traditional manner, fermentation takes place in new vats of French oak. 2.000 barriques of exclusively French oak are available for maturation. Mainly new bariques are used, a rather uncommon policy in Rioja. The ā€˛Roda Iā€¯ is a straight varietal Tempranillo from vines that are a minimum of 30 years old, selected from the best barrels, then matured for 16 months in 50% new and 50% second fill barriques. The ā€˛Roda IIā€¯ is made of Tempranillo from good barrels, blended with 25% Garnacha Tinta. All wines considered to be of insufficent quality for the Roda name are sold off in bulk to other producers. The latest product is the ā€¯Cirsionā€¯, with the 1998 vintage the first to be marketed. This involves an extremely rigorous selection of the very best grapes from the oldest vines, the yield for the 1998 vintage was an incredibly low 5 kilogrammes per hectare.
