The „Bodegas Muga S.A.” estate is located in the city of Haro in the heart of the Rioja Alta sub-region in Rioja in Spain. It was founded in 1932 by Don Isaac Muga and his wife Aurora Caño. After his death in 1969, the children Manuel, Isabel and Isaac took over the property, and have been continually increasing the size. The winery moved to a spacious complex of buildings near the railway station in Haro in 1972. The estate’s own vineyard area totals 70 hectares, and grapes are bought in from an additional 100 hectares. The principal grape varieties processed are Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Viura. In many respects, production methods are still quite traditional. Fermentation takes place in huge open oak vats. A sophisticated arrangement ensures pumping is kept to a minimum. The wines are racked or moved as little as possible, and only natural procedures are implemented. For instance, fining is done by means of egg white, which is beaten by hand. 17.000 barriques of American and French oak are available for maturation. The premium wines include the „Gran Reserva Prado Enea” and the blend„Torre Muga”. Annual production is around 100.000 cases (1,2 million bottles) , of which around 30% is exported.
