The „Bodegas Montecillo S.A.� estate is located in the town of Fuenmayor at the centre of the Rioja Alta sub-region in Rioja in Spain. It was founded in 1874 by Don Celestino Navajas Matute. It has been owned by the sherry-producing group Osborne since 1973, which has invested heavily since 1975. The winemaker is María Martínez. The estate does not own any vineyards, all grapes are bought in, with strict selective criteria applied. 85% of the wines produced are red, they are made primarily from Mazuelo, Tempranillo and Viura. 30.000 barriques are available for maturation, the capacity of the tanks totals 40.000 hectolitres. The premium wines include, for example, the Viña Monty, Viña Cumbrero and the Especial, which is produced only in exceptional vintages, from the best red grapes available. Annual production is around 3,3 million bottles (275.cases). Around half the production is exported.

Unfortunately, no wines have been submitted for several years now, so that we are unable to form a meaningful opinion on the current performance of this producer. For this reason, we see no option but to suspend the classification until further notice.
