D.O. ca RiojaThe „Bodegas Bilbaínas” estate is located in the city of Haro, in the heart of the sub-region of Rioja Alta in Spain. It was founded in 1859 gy the French wine company Savignon Frères & Cie.. It was given ist current name in 1901, when it was acquired by a group of businessmen from the city of Bilbao, from which the name is taken. The company became a supplier to the royal court in 1925, with its brand „Ederra Crianza”. In 1997, the bodega was bought by cava house Codorníu, and the entire operation from vineyards to cellars was modernised. Oenologist José Hidalgo is responsible for wine-making. The vineyard area totals 256 hectares, which are planted mainly with the standard Rioja varieties Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Graciano and Mazuelo. 19.000 barriques are available for maturation. The product range includes the following brands: „La Vicalanda”, „Vendimia Especial, „Viña Pomal and „Viña Zaco. It is reputed that Winston Churchill (1874-1965) and Salvador Dali (1904-1989) were fans of the Viña Pomal”. A cava (sparkling wine) by the name of „Royal Carlton” is also produced. Annual production is around 2,4 million bottles (200.000 cases) of wine.
