The estate is located in the commune of Sant Pau d´Ordal in the DO Penedès (Catalonia region) wine-growing region in Spain. It was founded in 1903 by Joan Albet i Rovirosa. He started producing wine onf the „Can Vendrell de la Codina” finca, which dates back to the 13th century. His successors, Joan Albet i Rion and Joan Albet i Carbó built the new „Xapallà” cellar in 1925. The total area of the property is 101 hectares, of which 76 hectares are planted with vines. The vineyards are located on the slopes of the western section of the Ordal mountains. White varieties planted are Xarel-Lo (15,3 ha), Parellada (9,4 ha), Macabeu (6,3 ha), Chardonnay (2,4 ha), Viognier (1,9 ha), Sauvignon Blanc (1,7 ha) and Muscat de Alejandría (0,5 ha), the red varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon (10,2 ha), Tempranillo (8,5 ha), Syrah (7 ha), Merlot (3,4 Ha), Garnatxa Tinta (2,5 ha), Petit Syrah (2 ha), Arinarnoa (1,8 Ha) and Caladoc (1 ha). Josep María Albet i Noya was the first wine farmer in Spain to start working the farm along strict organic guidelines from 1978 on. Measures implmented include a 50% reduction in the use of sulphur, when compared to conventional cellars. This is achieved by maintaining exceptional hygiene in the cellar, all equipment and surfaces are cleaned with water heated to 90 °Celsius. In the case of red wines, sulphur is only added after malo-lactic fermentation has been completed, while in white wines it is added only after fermentation, and always only in small quantities. Inert gas is used during fermentation in order to prevent oxidation. A wide range of varietal and blended wines is produced. In addition to still wines, quite a large quantity of sparkling wine (cava)is also produced. In addition to actual wine production, there is also a strong focus on research. For example, Josep M. and Toni Albet i Noya started a project in 1988 aimed at testing old, forgotten grape varieties. This search was so successful, with seven suitable varieties identified, that a second phase is now planned, working with another seven varieties until 2012.

Unfortunately, no wines have been submitted for several years now, so that we are unable to form a meaningful opinion on the current performance of this producer. For this reason, we see no option but to suspend the classification until further notice.
