One of the three wine-growing regions in Slovenia, located on the border with Croatia, it is named after the Savje river, which is a tributary of the Danube. It is located in the south of the country, in the north it borders on the Podravje wine-growing region. Posavje is sub-divided into three districts: Bela Krajina with 1.130 hectares, Bizeljsko Sremic with 1.700 hectares, and by far the largest area Dolenjska with 4.870 hectares. The vineyards thus cover a total area of 7.700 hectares. Mainly white wines are produced here. The leading white grape varieties are Laski Riesling (Welschriesling), Sauvignon Blanc, Beli Pinot (Pinot Blanc), Chardonnay, Rizvanec (Müller-Thurgau) and Bela Zlathnina (Chasselas). The leading red varieties are Modra Portugalka/Modra Kraljevina (Blauer Portugieser), Gamay, Modra Frankija (Blaufränkisch), Modri Pinot (Pinot Noir), Zametovka (Blauer Kölner), Sentlovrenka (Sankt Laurent) and Zweigelt. Three wines of the highest level of quality (PTP) are produced here, they are Belokranjec, Cvicek and Metliska Crnina. Several scenically beautiful wine routes lead through the Posavje region.
