The share of Riesling in German wine-growing regions is increasing. Last year, the area planted with this variety grew by 500 hectares.
As reported by the German Federal Bureau of Statistics, last year 21.722 hectares resp. 21,3 per cent of the total German vineyard area of 102.026 ha was planted with Riesling vines. This corresponds to an increase of around 500 hectares compared to the previous year.
With plantings of 5.272 ha, the Mosel region is the largest German Riesling growing region, closely followed by the Pfalz region with 5.248 ha. According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), Germany accounts for more than 60% of the Riesling vineyard area worldwide, a variety that is increasingly fashionable internationally.
