EBAY Wineauctions
Austrias most expensive wines
From Werner Feldner
Readers letter (so far 0)

The wines of Austria have gained reputation in the worldwide wine business. World renown Critics like Rene Gabriel, David Schildknecht for Robert Parkers „WineAdvocate“ or Bruce Sanderson for „WineSpectator“ give highest ratings for Austrian wines, ever since Alois Kracher won international award after award. And to match with famous Burgundies or Supertuscans is by far rather difficult. However I found 46 Austrian wines that were higher rated than 95 Points on WineSpectator and even 84 wines on Robert Parkers Online Service (eRobertParker.com) that were awarded with 95/100 or more! This confirms that the international peak has been reached already. Austria is a very small wine producing country and most of the “trophies” are out of stock before the even hit the market. If you are not among the lucky ones that get the best wines in a kind of „en primeur“ way, you might find some of Austria’s icon wines on eBay.

Wine merchant eBay?

In spite of many warnings to buy items on eBay without hesitation, eBay is one of the largest platforms for wine-sellers worldwide. In fact, the members that use eBay as an Online Marketplace to buy and sell wines that are hardly found in stores anymore, are increasing. Also rare Austrian wines are sold more often than a few years ago. And it is not seldom that such wines achieve higher prices than their „big brothers“ from Burgundy or Tuscany, like Mouton- or Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Masseto, Sassicaia or whatever. The table below shows the 20 most expensive wines of Austria sold on eBay. Whether the price is justifiable or not has to be decided by the consumer himself. As for me, some are really worth it.
