Exports of Austrian wines developed much more positively in 2009 than had been expected. While volume sales grew by 16 per cent, compared to 2008, the value growth was also still a respectable 5.3 per cent.
In spite of the reduced price per bottle achieved, the Austrian Wine Marketing office is still more than happy, calling it a sensational result. The volume of wine exported amounted to around 70 million litres, the value sales increased from 113 million to just on 119 million Euros.
The pace for the development of export sales was set by key markets such as Germany (volume + 15 per cent, value + 9 per cent), Switzerland, including Liechtenstein (volume + 27 per cent, value + 6 per cent), but also by growing export markets such as the Netherlands, Sweden and Japan.
