Franz Hirtzberger senior passed away

One of the greatest protagonists of Wachau wines has passed away. Franz Hirtzberger senior has died at the age of 85.
In the early 1970's, the winemaker and former mayor of the town of Spitz played a decisive role in preventing the construction of an electical power plant on the Danube river. He also campaigned successfully for the Wachau region to be recognised as a separate wine-growing region. It is partly thanks to his efforts that the Wachau region was recognised as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site.
