Alcohol provides protection against obesity
Readers letter (so far 0)
A study in the USA has shown that a regular intake of alcohol will protect women from obesity.
The Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston in the state of Massachusetts has investigated the effect of alcohol consumption on women. Female test persons who consumed alcohol regularly over a period of 13 years were less likely to gain weight than women who drank no alcohol, or only drank it irregularly. In the view of these results, researchers were surprised that the calorie content of alcohol showed no effects.
The study reflects data obtained from almost 20.000 women. Test persons consuming a glass of wine or around half a litre of beer daily had the lowest risk of weight gain. There were differences in terms of the type of alcohol consumed, with the greatest effect being achieved by the consumption of red wine.
