World congress on climate change and the wine industry

Readers letter (so far 0)

A congress on climate change entitled “International Conference on Climate Change and Wine“ is to take place in Spain next year. On 15 anf 16 February 2008, renowned experts, including wine experts, will be meeting in Barcelona to familiarise visitors with the effects of climate change and the future of the wine industry. It is the second congress of its kind.

The opening address at the congress will be held by former US vice-president Al Gore. Al Gore has become known for his political engagement in environmental protection, as well as for the documentary film „An Inconvenient Truth“. In addition there will be lectures by renowned experts such as Michael Rolland (oenologist), Ernst Loosen (wine producer and Decanter magazine's „Man of the Year“) and Prof. Dr. Hans-Rainer Schultz from the Geisenheim research centre.

According to its own statement, the Spanish Wine Academy wants to "assist in crystallising the public awareness on the possible effects of climate change, including its effects on the planet in general and the wine industry in particular.“ Current studies show that traditionally cold and wet regions such as England are starting to produce quality wines, while in the warmer regions it is becoming increasingly difficult to cultivate the same grape varieties as in the past.

The experts will also discuss the topic of how the earlier harvesting dates will require harvesting technology to be designed and restructured. There will also be discussions on what changes will be required in the wineries.
