In search of old vines

Readers letter (so far 0)

Researchers in Germany are searching for old grape varieties and ungrafted vines, courtesy of a study commissioned by the federal department for nutrition, agriculture and consumer protection.

The three-year study has been underway since the beginning of 2007, it is designed to identify and find all blocks of vines older than 60 years, and all ungrafted vines, including the identification of the grape varieties. Particular attention is being focused on rare historical varieties as well as on orphan clones of traditional varieties that are rarely bred. The federal institute for agriculture and nutrition (Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung - BLE)has entrusted the study to the working group for vine genetic resources in Germany, Jung + Fischer GbR.

Anybody who still has ungrafted vines in his vineyards that were planted prior to 1950, or knows of the existence of such vines, can report this to the working group for the identification of vine genetic resources in Germany, Jung + Fischer GbR (Lerchenweg 7, 97299 Zell am Main, Tel. 0931/3049980, arge@verm.de). The information will be treated in strict confidence on request. (WF)
