Wine healthy after all?
Readers letter (so far 0)
Politicians, wine producers and the public in France are arguing about the planned ban on free wine samples and tastings. As reported in French media, the minister of health has announced a revised draft pf the proposed law would be presented. In the meantime, there are new indications wine consumption has positive health aspects.
The draft law presented by minister of health Roselyne Bachelot met with considerable criticism in the first chamber of parliament, and producers associations mobilised their members in opposing the government's plans. The current draft proposes a ban on free wine tastings, which are currently common practice in many wine estates, and other wine events, wine trade shows and similar events would also be subject to severe restrictions. Restaurant owners in particular fear the new law may mean the end of a popular feature of many restaurants in France, the menues "vin compris" (including wine). The ministra has now announced the draft would be revised at short notice with a view to the controversial articles 23 and 24, in which, for example, Internet advertising is to be regulated. The minister specifically stated that the regulations are intended to reduce the abuse of alcohol, and are not directed at the culture of wine.
In the meantime, as reported in Decanter, wine producers see their position confirmed by a study that is to be presented officially in a few days time. Then, the national institute for agricultural research will present a long-term study that claims a moderate consumption of one to three glasses of wine per day is beneficial to health after all.
