Hail and rot reduce harvest volume
Readers letter (so far 0)
Although the 2008 vintage in Austria is not yet in the cellars, there is already one conclusion to be drawn: hail and fungus diseases have taken their toll, and will lead to a smaller harvest in some parts of the country.
Wine producers in Austria are currently battling with a significant spread of fungal diseases on the vines. In particular the peronospera fungus is a big problem, and together with the heavy hailstorms of the past few months seems likely to cause a significantly smaller harvest volume in some parts. It is estimated the total volume will be down by around six per cent compared to last year, partly a result of more than 3.000 cases of reported hail damage, with so far more than 12 million Euros being claimed in damages.
