Top price paid for old rarity
Readers letter (so far 0)
At the auction of the VDP Rheingau, a bottle of 1949 Trockenbeerenauslese wine has been sold for 5.100 Euros.
The bottle of 1949 Rauenthaler Baiken Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese came from the cellars of the state wine estates in Hessen, and an exciting battle among bidders saw the price rise to 5.100 Euros - the highest price ever paid at an autumn auction sale at Kloster Eberbach. The bottle, with a content of 0,7 litres, was put up at a starting price of 300 Euros. All the other rarities went at significantly lower prices, for instance the 1969 Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder Trockenbeerenauslese (also from the state wine estate) was a real "bargain" at 670 Euros for a half-bottle.
