DOC for white wines on the island of Sardinia off the coast of Italy. The zone includes the communes of Baratili San Pietro, Cabras, Milis, Narbolia, Nurachi, Ollastra, Oristano, Riola Sardo, San Vero Milis, Siamaggiore, Simaxis, Simaxis, Solarussa, Tramatza, Zeddiani and Zerfaliu in the province of Oristano. This is described as being the most typical wine of the island. It was known on the mainland as well as in Greece in the 16th century. The vines are trained on the soil, allowing them to soak up the heat reflected from the sandy limestone-rich soil. The wine is matured in small barrels that are not completely filled. This allows a layer of flor yeast to develop, similar to sherry, and the taste is also typical, and similar to sherry. The wine is a 100% varietal wine made from Vernaccia Oristano (which is not related to the other grape varieties known as Vernaccia), it has an alcohol content of 15% vol. If it is matured for three years and has a minimum alcohol content of 15,5% vol it may be called Superiore. There is also a Liquoroso Secco (also known as Liquoroso Dry) and a Liquoroso Dolce version.
