Marches

DOC for dry white wines in the Marches region in Italy. The zone includes the communes of Cerreto d´Esi and Fabriano in the province of Ascona, as well as the communes of Camerino, Castelraimondo, Esanatoglia, Gagliole, Matelica (from which the name is taken) and Pioraco in the province of Macerata, the total vineyard area is around 300 hectares. The wine is yellow with green tinges and is made from Verdicchio (85-100%), as well as optionally from other permitted white varieties (up to 15%). Other wines produced are a high-alcohol Passito, a Riserva that is matured for two years, and a Spumante. There is a second, much larger Verdicchio DOC zone called Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi.
