DOC for a wide range of mostly dry red, rosé and white wines in the Maremma area in the south of the wine-growing region of Tuscany in Italy. The zone includes the commune of Monteverdi Marittimo in the province of Pisa, as well as the communes of Campiglia Marittima, Piombino, Sassetta, San Vincevo and Suvereto in the province of Livorno. The varietal-labelled wines must contain a minimum of 85% of the stated variety, the remainder may be made up of other permitted varieties of the same colour. The varietal wines are Aleatico Passito, Ansonica, Ansonica Passito, Cabernet Sauvignon (also made as a Superiore and a Riserva), Ciliegiolo, Merlot (also made as a Superiore and a Riserva), Sangiovese (also made as a Superiore and a Riserva) and Vermentino.
Certain wines produced in the commune of Suvereto are permitted to bear this name on the label. They are Suvereto (Cabernet Sauvignon 50-100%, Merlot up to 50%), as well as the varietal-labelled (85%) wines Suvereto Cabernet Sauvignon, Suvereto Merlot and Suvereto Sangiovese. Rosso and Rosato are made from Sangiovese (50-100%), Cabernet Sauvignon (up to 50%), as well as optionally from other permitted red varieties (up to 20%). The Bianco is a blend made from Trebbiano Toscano (50-100%), Vermentino (up to 50%), as well as optionally from other permitted white varieties (up to 20%).
