DOC for white wine in the wine-growing region of Tuscany in Italy. The name is taken from the Arbia river, this achieved historic fame in 1260 AD when the opposing armies of the city states of Siena and Florence waged a battle at Monte Aperti which was so bloody that according to Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) „the waters were coloured red from all the blood“. The zone includes the communal area of Siena, as well as parts of the communes of Asciano, Buonconvento, Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole in Chianti, Monteriggioni, Monteroni d´Arbia, Murlo, Radda in Chianti and Sovicille in the province of Siena. The dry wine is a blend made from Malvasia del Chianti (70-90%), Chardonnay (10-30%), as well as optionally from other permitted white varieties (up to 15%). The same mix of varieties is used to make an amber coloured Vin Santo with an alcohol content of 17% vol, this is made in Secco, Amabile and Dolce versions.
