Southern section of the twin region of Trentino-Alto Adige in Italy, the northern section is Alto Adige. It is geographically identical with the province of Trento. The vineyard area totals 7.100 hectares. They are located on the gravelly alluvial plains of the Adige valley, and on the partly very steep slopes of the side vallies. Glacial rubble with a high limestone content predominates at higher altitudes. The climate is drier and warmer than it is in Alto Adige. The influence of Lake Garda is evident in the south, this creates a mild climate. Red wines account for three quarters of production, white wines make up the remaining quarter. Around half the wines produced have DOC status. The most important varieties are the red varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marzemino, Teroldego and Lambrusco, as well as the white varieties Chardonnay (a quarter of the total area), Pinot Grigio, Müller-Thurgau and Goldmuskateller. Trentino is among the leading regions for sparkling wine production in Italy. Quality is monitored by the Spumante Trento Classico group, which consists of around 20 houses. The comprehensive DOC region is also called Trentino. The DOC zones are:
* Casteller
* Teroldego Rotaliano
* Trentino#Trentino (DOC)
* Trento
* Valdadige (Etschtaler) – also in Veneto
