Top wines in Domain Torgiano DOC
DOC for dry red, rosé and white wines in the wine-growing region of Umbria in Italy. The name is derived from „Torre di Giano“ (tower of Janus, the two-faced Roman god who also gave his name to the month of January). The zone includes the commune of Torgiano, from which the name is taken, in the province of Perugia. The varietal-labelled wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero and Riesling Italico must contain a minimum of 85% of the stated variety, the remaining 15% may be made up of other permitted varieties of the same colour. The Bianco is a blend made from Trebbiano Toscano (50-70%), Grechetto (15-40%), as well as optionally from other permitted white varieties (up to 15%). The Spumante is a blend made from Pinot Nero (40-50%), Chardonnay (40-50%), as well as optionally from other permitted white varieties (up to 15%). Rosso and Rosato are blends made from Sangiovese (50-70%), Canaiolo (15-30%), Trebbiano Toscano (up to 10%), as well as optionally from other permitted red varieties. This wine was created by winemaker Giorgio Lungarotti in the 1970’s. Practically the entire production is still sourced from his estate (280 hectares, includes a wine museum). The flagship wine „Rubesco Riserva Monticchio“ is made in only the best vintages, and enjoys cult status. The Torgiano Rosso Riserva was awarded DOCG status in 1991.
