Sub-zone (Ital.: Santa Maddalena) for red wine within the regional DOC Alto Adige, in the Trentino-Alto Adige wine-growing region in Italy. The zone includes vineyard slopes on the municipal boundaries of Bolzano as well as parts of the communes of Cornedo and Renon. Wines produced on historical sites may bear the additional designation Classico or Klassisch on the label. The name has been protected in Italy since 1931, and was proclaimed one of the three leading red wines in Italy under the Fascist government. The ruby red dry wine is made from Schiava (90-100%), as well as optionally from Lagrein and/or Pinot Nero (up to 10%). It is colloquially referred to as the „Queen of Schiava”.
